The History of the Savoy hotel

The WhitehouseJoseph A Jeffrey was born in Plymouth, 12 April 1818 and immigrated to South Africa, Port Elizabeth in 1845. Here he owned the " Hope Hotel ". He moved to the Kabeljauwsriver area in 1849 and started a business called "The Fishery", trading with the locals.

In 1852 the first 40 erven was surveyed and Joseph bought 4 [ numbers 1, 2, 9 & 10] for £79  herewith our town name Jeffreys Bay. He built 'The White House" on plot 10 and started a general dealer. In 1856 James Niven bought "The White House" for £710 from Joseph, who died on 17 August 1864. We got our first Post Office in 1901 and our first Railway Link in 1905 and Tourism flourished.
Sarah E Reginald's bought "The White House", applied for a liquor license and renamed it the "Jeffreys Bay Hotel".

Sarah ran this hotel for 3 years before selling it to William H Haskins in 1903. From here on it changed owners many times. In 1937 the "Jeffreys Bay Hotel" was demolished and the finest new double storey building was erected, which on opening was named the "Savoy Hotel".
It changed hands again a couple of times.
Demolished again in 1968 the hotel was rebuilt to its present structure. Since then the "Savoy Hotel" had undergone a number of extensive renovations, extensions and refurbishments.
